Each year CASA-ACÉA puts out a call for submissions from architecture students across Canada. The work is displayed and shared as part of a National Student Work Showcase. This is a platform to curate and highlight the work of students enrolled in CACB accredited schools of architecture throughout Canada.
There are three categories based on the level of education: 1st/2nd year undergraduate, 3rd/4th year undergraduate and masters. The Showcase Committee selects a panel of jury members (academics and practitioners) that evaluate all submissions. Projects are graded based on resolution, representation and relevance. CASA also runs a People's Choice Awards category where the winner is determined by public vote.
This year, in addition to having their posters displayed at the RAIC Conference in Vancouver, the winners will receive a Canadian Architect subscription, a book by the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), and an one year Enscape license.

The RAIC Promoting Equity and Justice Working Group will host an interactive session on housing and equity in the context of the federal 'Build Canada Homes' initiative. Recent federal efforts to accelerate affordable housing construction highlight a long-standing policy assumption amongst all levels of government that increasing supply alone can resolve the housing crisis. This session challenges that assumption by centring perspectives often overlooked in fast-track housing approaches, including Indigenous rights, disability justice, long-term care, newcomer experiences, and climate-related housing vulnerability. Through expert insight and facilitated discussion, participants will critically explore where accelerated housing models may fall short and what more inclusive, equitable approaches could look like. The session invites architects to reflect on their professional role in advocating for housing solutions that respond meaningfully to diverse community needs while supporting long-term social and environmental resilience.

Hosted by the Fees and Procurement Working Group, this facilitated session invites participants to engage in a national conversation about the value of architectural services and the realities shaping professional fees and procurement practices in Canada. Building on the work of the FPWG over the past year, the session will introduce a draft national statement on fees, compensation, and procurement.
Participants will hear a brief overview of the working group’s activities and highlights of the draft statement. Discussion will also focus on six areas shaping the profession today, including professionalism and public value, competition and fee undercutting, procurement and RFP practices, market conditions affecting fees, emerging fee models, and advocacy for architectural value.
The session concludes with a forward-looking discussion on practical actions architects can take to support procurement reform and strengthen how the value of architecture is communicated. Feedback gathered will inform the final published statement planned for publication in Fall/Winter 2026.

Architecture and the Ethics of Responsibility: Designing for a Fragile World.
In this keynote, Derakshani will explore how contemporary architecture must respond to the social, environmental, and cultural vulnerabilities that define our era. Drawing on his 43 years of involvement with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture—and on continuous engagement with architects, clients, builders, and master craftsmen across five continents—he will reflect on how thoughtful design can foster resilience, dignity, and hope in diverse and challenged communities. Exemplary projects demonstrate powerful lessons on the ethical foundations of architectural practice and on the transformative role architects can play in strengthening our shared future.
Derakshani about the shared values of architecture and how architects can work in various contexts, geographies and learn from the achievements of others they do not know. He will use few examples from projects in China, Bangladesh, Iran, Egypt, Denmark and USA.

Beyond Adoption: United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the architectural profession
The RAIC has adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The International Union of Architects has now done the same. But what does that mean for architects working in what is now known as Canada?
This Indigenous-led conversation invites Canadian architects to reflect on how UNDRIP principles connect to everyday professional practice. Rather than focusing on policy language, the session will explore questions of relationship, responsibility, consent, authorship, land, and accountability in design.
Through dialogue and shared perspectives from Indigenous architects, participants will consider how architectural processes can better respect Indigenous rights, knowledge systems, and governance. The goal is not to provide a checklist. It is to open space for reflection, learning, and practical shifts in how architects approach engagement, collaboration, and decision-making.
UNDRIP is not abstract. It shapes how we think about land, community, and the role of the profession in reconciliation. This session creates space to ask what meaningful implementation could look like in Canadian architectural practice.

How might we approach our multifaceted responsibilities as designers and architects of a decarbonized future? What forms might climate actions take across questions of equity, heritage, or environmental justice? How might our agency be variously rooted in relational practices, material management, or technological knowhow? By proposing a range of climate-responsive strategies and considerations – a multi-scalar community-oriented study of modernist Swahili housing, an interdisciplinary inquiry into the retrofit of aluminum curtain wall systems, and methodical testing of bio-based systems in Canada's cold weather climates–, the presentations in this session offer glimpses into the productive collaborations between researchers, practitioners, and industry partners to re-think architecture's material and environmental engagement.

The Gibson Art Museum, designed by Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects with Iredale Architecture, responds to the campus master plan by Arthur Erickson. The Gibson is positioned as a gateway building and redefines contemporary architecture through a net-zero vision rooted in nature. Its mass-timber structure meets precision-crafted, specially shaped Randers Tegl clay brick from Denmark, merging traditional masonry artistry with modern performance. The result is a striking, purpose-built composition of material honesty and sculptural intent that welcomes campus and community.

Reconciliation cannot begin with sentiment — it must begin with truth. With conference taking place on unceded Indigenous lands and coinciding with the National Day for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, this panel grounds discussion in the legal, institutional, and lived realities that shape architectural practice today. Reflecting on the journey of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Task Force, panelists will examine progress made, lessons learned, and areas where work remains early. The conversation will move beyond symbolic gestures to consider what accountability requires of architects in practice, governance, and education. Participants will be invited to reflect on how reconciliation becomes sustained structural change — not a checkbox or finite goal, but an ongoing professional responsibility and a transformative opportunity.

What does it mean to teach architecture at a moment when the discipline's tools, contexts, and assumptions are shifting? This session brings together three educators working through that question from different angles: infrastructural thinking as a framework for engaging systems and communities; close attention to how students learn to see and narrate the built world; and the challenge of recognizing genuine learning in a moment when AI can convincingly reproduce many of its outputs. Grounded in experiences from both studio and seminar teaching, the presentations open a broader conversation about pedagogical values, forms of learning, and the future directions of architectural education.

Over the past half-century, architectural research and pedagogy have increasingly branched out from academic seclusion into communities and places where experiential learning opportunities synergistically engage with local geographies and contexts. This session offers three examples of how programs in Canada are forming such partnerships and collaborations with communities, industries, and organizations. Student learning and design research are woven into reciprocal conversations about the pressing challenges we collectively face, while offering tangible insights to how rigorous design thinking, creative making, and responsible engagement can continue to inspire a positive path forward.

Join us for a special keynote lunch featuring internationally renowned architect Moshe Safdie, presented through an exclusive recorded lecture prepared for the RAIC Conference.
While Safdie is unable to attend in person, he has created a 30-minute presentation titled Garden Typologies for the Mega City, offering a rare opportunity to engage with his reflections on a remarkable career that has shaped architecture and cities around the world. The lecture explores public space through six of his most significant projects, including Habitat 67, Vancouver Public Library (Library Square), and Marina Bay Sands. Through these works, Safdie shares insights into the ideas, challenges, and ambitions that have informed his design approach across decades of practice.

Architectural education in Canada grew from European-Beaux Arts traditions and, over the decades, has typically followed trends south of the border. In recent years, transnational initiatives like the Canadian Architecture Forums on Education (CAFÉ), and leadership in Indigenous placemaking and curriculum development, have created unique venues and values in the Canadian-Turtle Island context. This session explores the potential for new networks and counter-narratives for architectural scholarship, criticism and discourse. Presentations range from 1930s architecture school exercises, to a recent cross-Canada super-studio led by members of Architects Against Housing Alienation (AHAA), to propositions for new infrastructures of solidarity amid heightened scrutiny of equity topics in architectural research.

The Power of Beauty: Why it matters
Why do we remember buildings, locations and experiences? Even a place visited in our childhood can conjure emotions that make an impact on us through the memories they create. Brooks and Scarpa will explain the creative process that aspires to make a lasting impression out of even a brief encounter.
Beauty is deeply intertwined with human values, social structures, and individual well-being. Its relevance can be seen in the way societies and cultures celebrate, pursue, and define beauty. It impacts almost every aspect of life from art and architecture to daily routines and social norms.
Beauty is the promise of happiness.” Happiness is one of our fundamental human needs and Beauty fulfills that promise. Buildings that we admire are ultimately those which, in a variety of ways, extol the values we think worthwhile. Whether through material innovation , form, colors or service to society, qualities such as friendliness, kindness, subtlety, strength and intelligence are part of what we believe are beautiful. . Our sense of beauty and our understanding of the nature of what is good are intertwined and inseparable.
Brooks and Scarpa's work is deeply rooted in conditions of the everyday, and works with our perception and preconceptions to allow us to see things in new ways. They do this, not by escaping the restrictions of practice, but by looking, questioning and reworking the very process of design and building, rethinking the way things normally get done – with material, form, construction, even financing –– and to subsequently redefine it to cull out it’s latent potentials – making the “ordinary extraordinary.

Natural and human caused disasters disproportionately affect persons with disabilities due to barriers in the built environment, emergency planning systems, and evacuation protocols. This session explores how universal design, accessibility standards, and disaster resilience intersect in architectural practice, grounded in lived experience perspectives.
The session will introduce the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program and outline how it provides a measurable, performance based framework to evaluate and improve accessibility in buildings and sites. It will also examine international initiatives within the Union of International Architects, including the Architecture for All and Natural and Human Disasters Work Programs, which advance inclusive and resilient design globally.
Using built case studies and applied examples, the presenters will identify design strategies and building practices that integrate accessibility, emergency preparedness, and climate resilience. The session will move beyond minimum code compliance to explore approaches that prioritize independence, dignity, and safety for persons with disabilities in both everyday use and crisis conditions.
